In Memoriam: Greg Andrew Spira

Greg Andrew Spira was born in New York City on April 27, 1967 and died there on December 28, 2011 after complications resultant from polycystic kidney disease and a subsequent kidney transplant.

The first winner of the Greg Spira Baseball Research Award was announced on April 27, 2013.  Trent McCotter, an attorney residing in Washington, D.C., was awarded top honors for his essay, “Cal Ripken’s Record for Consecutive Innings.”

Remembering Greg

My Brother Greg Spira

In thinking about Greg, I am reminded of a comment made by satirist Tom Lehrer, in introducing the song “Alma” on the album That Was The Year That Was, where he said “It’s people like that who make you realize how little you’ve accomplished. It is a sobering thought, for example, that when Mozart was my age, he had been dead for two years.”
